Russian Icons

The Icon Depicting the Theotokos is based on a miracle witnessed by Moses on Mount Horeb. From a bush that was burning yet unconsumed by fire he was called upon by God to free the people of Israel from slavery. The Christian Church viewed this miracle as symbolic of Mother Mary who gave birth to Jesus while remaining a virgin. Over time the icon developed into an image rich with intricate symbolism. The burning bush is here represented by two diamonds surrounded by angels.
