Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) is widely recognized as the last great master of Ukiyo-e and one of the form's greatest innovators. Living the last years of feudal Japan and the first years of modern Japan following the Meiji Restoration, Yoshitoshi was as equally interested in new things as concerned with the loss of traditional Japanese culture. This print is part of a series called Yumei Bujutsu no Homare (Courageous Masters of the Art of War) produced in 1865.
