Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) is widely recognized as the last great master of Ukiyo-e and one of the form's greatest innovators. Living the last years of feudal Japan and the first years of modern Japan following the Meiji Restoration, Yoshitoshi was as equally interested in new things as concerned with the loss of traditional Japanese culture. This print is part of a series called Kokoku Nijushiko (Twenty-Four Accomplishments of Imperial Japan). It portrays Kato Kiyomasa, a feudal lord of the 16th century most well known for his military accomplishments during the Seven-Year War against the Korean dynasty of Joseon.
