Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) is widely recognized as the last great master of Ukiyo-e and one of the form's greatest innovators. Living the last years of feudal Japan and the first years of modern Japan following the Meiji Restoration, Yoshitoshi was as equally interested in new things as concerned with the loss of traditional Japanese culture. One of his greatest works was this series, One Hundred Aspects of the Moon, depicting scenes from Japanese and Chinese history and legend, with the moon as the unifying element.
