The Lohans, or Arhats, are believed to be Buddha's original followers who attained enlightenment and reached Nirvana through the Eightfold Path. They were instructed to await Maitreya, the next enlightened Buddha prophesized to arrived many millennia after Gautama Buddha's death. In China, there were originally only 16 Lohan but two were added sometime in the Tang Dynasty and are popular subjects in Buddhist art, often adorning the entrance way of temples.
