The Asmat are an ethnic group of Papua New Guinea who possess one of the most well-known and vibrant woodcarving traditions. Asmat body masks are full-length costumes made of plaited rattan, bark, and sago leaf fiber. They are usually painted with natural red and white pigments and adorned with skirts crafted from sago leaves. The masks are worn during ceremonies to symbolize otherworldly spirits.
